9/11
Published on September 12, 2012 By Daiwa In Politics

I fume when I hear 9/11 being labeled a 'tragedy', often by well-intentioned people who should know better.

When people die in an earthquake, tornado, tsunami or hurricane, it's a tragedy.

9/11 was a barbaric, unspeakable, premeditated act of mass murder, conceived and carried out by the most depraved of all scum, unworthy of the word human.  It differed from Auschwitz only in its method and victims.

To label it a tragedy is to dishonor and trivialize those victims.

Never forget.

You're thinking of natural disaster.

Tragedy refers to both natural disasters AND stuff men did.

I agree.  Imagine in ten years...it will likely be referred to as a "series of unfortunate events."  (Though those books are at LEAST entertaining!)

Natural disasters are both tragedies and tragic for the victims.

Barbaric, unspeakable, premeditated acts of mass murder ('stuff men do') are tragic for the victims but they are not 'tragedies'.

On the day we paused to pay respect to and honor the memory of slaughtered innocents, they paused to desecrate our embassies and murder one of our ambassadors.  And our president regrets that we made them murder our ambassador.

Tragedy:

very sad event: an event in life that evokes feelings of sorrow or grief

Go ahead and redefine words if you want, I'll be using the old definitions over here.

That's fine.  I think you understand the distinction being made.

It's a tragedy.  But it's also a lot more than that.

Yeah, I get it.

It was an unspeakable horror perpetrated on our society that had nothing to do with us and everything to do with their beliefs.

Our President shouldn't be apologizing for making them do anything.  Their belief system says to do it.

Of course, it also says NOT to do it.
